Xia Smith is a contemporary British artist who uses oil painting in tandem with Japanese silk painting, illustration and tattoo. Utilising strange dreamlike imagery, the artist explores the psychological phenomena of dissociation. 

 

Born in 1997 in the South of England, Smith studies at Bath Spa School of Art and Design. Their work has been shown in various exhibitions in England including a group show at the Michael Pennie Gallery. From 2022 to 2023, Smith moved to Japan to study traditional Japanese painting techniques and contemporary Japanese art at the Seian University of Art and Design. Whilst living in Japan their work was exhibited in Kyoto and Shiga. Smith has travelled across the UK and Paris to do guest residencies in various tattoo studios including Frank Carter’s Rose of Mercy studio. Currently, Smith lives and works in Bristol, United Kingdom.
